City Immersion

CUSP-GX 8833 City Immersion (3 credits)

Typically offered each fall

Department: Center for Urban Science & Progress*

The Center for Urban Science and Progress offers incredible experiential learning course examining the strengths and challenges a city faces. Applying the Co-Cities Protocol and the CUSP Knowledge Tracks (AI, Complex Systems, GIS, Policy Analytics, Smart Infrastructure, Sustainability, Urban Technology Management) students engage with public authorities, civil society organizations, social innovators, businesses, and academic institutions to understand the city beyond what is presented in articles, text books and media. Students will collaborate with communities of the city to co-create informed, inclusive, and innovative strategies in response to identified pressing concerns and present their work to participating partners.

*This course is open to all graduate students across Tandon. You must verify with your academic adviser if it can count for you and how it fits into your degree program.

Costs

As this experience is 3 credits, students must pay the tuition. In addition, students will incur a Global Program Fee determined annually. This fee covers accommodations, international health insurance, several meals, and local transportation.

Airfare, visas and other travel documents are not included and must be booked individually by the student.

Global Perspectives in Emerging Technologies

GA-GY 8003 Global Perspectives in Emerging Technologies (3 credits)

Typically offered each spring

Department: Interdisciplinary

This online course explores global technology and innovation trends, examining key regions' economic, regulatory, and societal contexts while also identifying barriers to tech expansion in slower-developing areas. Using historical data and insights from industry experts, students will analyze the future impact of emerging technologies on the global economy and society. A visit to a major tech hub provides real-world exposure to the business decisions, infrastructure, and regulatory environments shaping tech innovation.

Travel Component

This course includes a required international travel component during NYU’s annual Spring Break, where students will take part in site visits, industry lectures, discussions, and cultural activities — all aimed at deepening your understanding of the tech innovation in the selected country/region.

Current locations include: Berlin, Germany and Prague, Czech Republic (EU)

Costs

In addition to the graduate tuition cost for 3 credits, students will incur a Global Travel Fee determined annually. This fee covers accommodations, international health insurance, several meals, and local transportation.

Heartland Insights: Tulsa Tech Industry & Innovation Immersion

Typically offered during Spring Break

Department: Interdisciplinary

The program is structured to combine hands-on industry exposure (e.g., aerospace/drone labs, clean energy firms, urban innovation startups) with expert insight from local professionals, academics, and community leaders.

Participants will engage in small-group seminars, reflection sessions, and networking meals, all aiming to bridge engineering expertise with real-world applications in city-building and technology-driven social impact.

You'll have the opportunity to network with professionals from in and across Tulsa, connect with other students across NYU, learn about new and exciting opportunities, including the GRI Research Fellowship for PhD students and a Postdoc opportunity at NYU Tulsa.

Travel Component

This experience takes place during NYU’s annual Spring Break, where students will take part in site visits, industry lectures, discussions, and cultural activities all aimed at deepening your understanding of the region.

Service Learning

The Tandon Academic Affairs Department offers incredible service learning opportunities for students passionate about healthcare, infrastructure, sustainability, and community development! During 1-2 weeks, you'll be working on projects designed to support the UN Sustainable Development Goals. This is your chance to contribute to local infrastructure improvements and community well-being, all while gaining hands-on experience and making a meaningful impact.

Past locations have included: Jamaica, Tanzania, Sri Lanka, and Kenya
