But it’s not enough to explore what’s possible in the world of new technologies — we need to consider what’s worth creating and why. We believe in sharing information, democratizing technology, helping the world emerge as a better place, and ensuring that new media is transparent, equitable, and accessible to all.
When art, gaming, and tech intersect
NYU Tandon’s Integrated Digital Media program is a STEAM engine driving creative practice, experimentation, media design, and engineering. Projects include using motion capture technology to reimagine theatrical performance; harnessing AR/VR to radically change the way people engage with information, entertainment, the environment, and one another; creating citizen science tools to empower New York City residents; and helping NASA develop next-generation user interfaces for space exploration.
And the Game Innovation Lab at Tandon is exploring the symbiotic relationship between video and digital gaming, computer science, and artificial intelligence. The implications go far beyond avatars and game controllers: the work done at the Lab could lead to profound innovations in automated systems able to run processes for everything from building HVAC systems to global shipping.
R. Luke DuBois
Associate Professor R. Luke DuBois co-directs Tandon’s Integrated Digital Media (IDM) program. He has devoted himself to weaving information from a variety of sources into art and music that explores the tensions between algorithms, portraiture and temporal space. His artwork is represented by bitforms gallery in New York City, and he can be heard on more than 25 albums, both individually and with a series of avant-garde musical groups.
Mark Skwarek
Mark Skwarek's work seeks to bridge the gap between the virtual and physical world with augmented reality. He has a long record of international augmented reality work, ranging from “erasing” the DMZ battlements between North and South Korea (a piece he did on site), to the virtual elimination of the barricades between Palestine and Israel, at the Gaza Strip.

The Integrated Digital Media (IDM) Program fosters creative practice, design research and multidisciplinary experimentation with emerging media technologies. The Game Design Future Lab (GDFL) focuses on digital game design, development, infrastructure for games, and emerging media.
Game Innovation Lab
The Game Innovation Lab brings together faculty and students from the School of Engineering and the greater NYU community doing research focused on games as an innovation challenge. The Lab's emphasis is on the technical / engineering / science side of games and simulations. Sample projects include user interface innovation (sensor-based tracking, multi-touch), network and video quality research, and research on games for learning.
IDM XR LAB
Located in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, the IDM XR Lab provides access to the latest XR equipment and informational workshops and tutorials.
Immersive Computing Lab
The Immersive Computing Lab at NYU Tandon School of Engineering conducts cutting edge research that spans the fields of computer graphics, physics, and computational cognition, with the goal of creating unprecedented virtual and augmented reality systems to revolutionize urban life. Our research directions include novel multimodal/low-latency/immersive interaction devices, bio-physically inspired wearable displays, perception-aware VR/AR, and beyond.

Tandon @ The Yard
NYU Tandon @ The Yard is a 14,000-square-foot virtual production and AR/VR/XR research facility within the Brooklyn Navy Yard, bringing research-grade emerging technology within reach of media, entertainment, and cultural sectors of the city.
Visualization and Data Analytics Center
ViDA consists of computer scientists who work closely with domain experts to apply the latest advances in computing to problems of critical societal importance, and simultaneously generate hypotheses and methods that new data demands.
