New Yorkers see higher utility rates as state struggles to manage affordability

New York utility bills are rising due to multiple factors including weather extremes, infrastructure needs, and expensive renewable energy development. Assistant Professor Dharik Mallapragada explained that New York lagged behind other states in transmission infrastructure. "Many, many years ago, (Texas) built out all this transmission (infrastructure) from regions where there is not that much demand to the demand-heavy regions," he said, noting this allowed cheaper power development and could help unlock transmission solutions for New York.
