Has New York’s congestion pricing reduced congestion?

New York’s congestion pricing program, launched in January 2025, has led to fewer cars, faster traffic, increased biking and transit use, and fewer collisions in Manhattan. Approximately 80,000 fewer vehicles now enter the toll zone daily, while Citibike ridership and pedestrian presence have risen. NYU Tandon’s C2SMARTER — a U.S. Department of Transportation-funded Tier 1 University Transportation Center — which tracks these trends with its interactive dashboard, held a panel that pointed to the program’s effectiveness. As one panelist noted, “Early results are exactly consistent with what the congestion pricing models predicted.”
