Step 1: Academics & Course Planning

Tel Aviv Lab

The NYU Bulletin serves as your primary guide for sequencing courses to graduate on time. However, it’s important to understand that the Bulletin provides only a sample plan—it is not the only way to complete your degree requirements.

While some courses must be taken in a specific order because of prerequisite chains (e.g., Calculus I before Calculus II), many major requirements can be taken in different semesters without affecting your progress. For example, Physics III rarely impacts other courses outside of advanced physics, which most students do not need.

To support your planning, we created custom tables that outline each degree programs' four-year plan tailored to your major based off of the NYU Bulletin. In the rightmost column, you’ll find courses that have already been evaluated and approved as equivalents at various international exchange partners. Use this resource to identify study abroad locations that align with your major requirements while keeping you on track for graduation.

Soon, we will upload additional sample plans of study for each majors, highlighting the most viable locations and terms for studying abroad—ensuring access to the courses you need to stay on track. These plans will also provide guidance on any registration adjustments you may need to make upon returning from study abroad. Designed as practical alternatives to the standard NYU Bulletin plan, these resources will help you see how study abroad can seamlessly fit into your academic journey and can assist in narrowing down your options.

Course Planning for Study Abroad

Depending on your major, some study abroad locations may offer courses that better align with your degree requirements than others.

Below, you’ll find a list of courses that:

  • Have been approved as Tandon equivalents
  • Are pending evaluation by Tandon faculty
  • Or have been deemed non-transferable

The list is organized by study abroad location and includes filtering and sorting options to help you plan effectively.

Important Reminders

  • Do not resubmit pending courses.
If a course is already listed as pending evaluation, please do not submit it again. Instead, email tandonglobal@nyu.edu, and we can follow up with the appropriate department to help expedite the review process.

  • Balance your course load and consider taking Online NYU Courses While Abroad
When planning, aim for an equal balance between STEM requirements and HUSS/Free Electives whenever possible. Additionally, students are able to take some Online NYU Courses while abroad as long as they are meeting the enrollment requirements at their study abroad location.

  • Actual course availability may vary
Just because a course appears on this list doesn’t guarantee it will be offered during your chosen semester. Always check the "Academics" section of each NYU Global Site or the "Course Lookup Guide" in our Exchange Partner profiles for current offerings. Please be sure to check the "Typically Offered" field to verify which semester courses are offered. When planning for future semesters, partner schools often have not yet finalized their course offerings for the term you’ll be studying abroad. In these cases, use the previous corresponding semester as a reference (e.g., if you plan to study abroad in Spring 2026 and the course list is not yet available, review the Spring 2025 offerings). This will give you a good idea of what courses are likely to be available until the official schedule is released.

  • Credit Conversion.
We are currently updating the "Credits You Will Receive at NYU" field but the following is a guide for determining how many credits you'll receive from each course abroad:
    • All NYU Global Sites: 1 Credit = 1 Tandon Credit
    • Asian Universities: 1 Credit = 1 Tandon Credit
    • American University of Cairo: 1 Credit = 1 Tandon Credit
    • Any European University (excluding the UK): 2 Credits = 1 NYU Credit
    • United Kingdom Universities: Varies, but in general you will take 3-4 classes to equal a full course load.
    • Australian Universities: Varies, but in general you will take 3-4 classes to equal a full course load.

  • This list is always evolving.
Courses are added and updated regularly. Some exchange partners may not yet have had students review their offerings for your academic needs—you could be the first!

If you find a course at a study abroad location that is not listed, you can submit it for evaluation directly through the Tandon Global Portal. If you have any questions regarding courses or how to submit them for evaluation, please email tandonglobal@nyu.edu.

FAQs

You may think they don't offer courses you need, but they actually may offer HUSS and Free Electives that are needed to complete your degree. Study abroad is a time to take courses you wouldn't have access to if you spent all 4 years here at Tandon.

Consider reviewing the prerequisites, shifting courses around, reviewing the Global Study Planner, and have an open mind of where you want to study abroad based on the courses that are offered at each location.

We recommend again reviewing the Academic Planning section above as well.

Yes! In almost all cases you can take an online courses while studying abroad. For example, Thermodynamics and Dynamics are both offered online every year. This can help students stay on track if they are unable to find enough relevant courses at particular study abroad locations.

Online course offerings differ form year to year, and there is not ongoing list of what will or will not be offered online.

While this option is available through all exchange programs, students studying at one of the NYU Global Sites will need to differ to Global Programs on which sites allow this.

Students must always maintain the minimum course registration requirements for each country in order to maintain their immigration status. (I.e. If South Korea requires students to maintain 12 credits in country, you want to take Thermodynamics online, you cannot simply take 9 credits in South Korea. You will need to take 12 credits in South Korea in addition to the online course).

NYU Global Sites

Grades and credits are exactly the same as at Tandon. The grades you receive will count towards your GPA and degree completion.

International Exchange

Grades are P/F. Students need to receive an equivalent of a D in order to receive a Pass which will not affect your GPA. If you score below a D, you will receive an F and it will affect you NYU GPA.

Depending on your department/major they may require you to receive an equivalent of a C while studying abroad in certain major required courses in order to proceed onto the succeeding course. That is even if you receive the Pass they may want to see that you indeed earned at least the equivalent of a C.

Credits will be converted accordingly and you will learn more about this process upon acceptance/nomination to an exchange parter.
