Overview
The purpose of the National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) is to help ensure the quality, vitality, and diversity of the scientific and engineering workforce of the United States. A goal of the program is to broaden participation of the full spectrum of diverse talents in STEM.
NSF GRFP is open to students pursuing an engineering degree and must be a U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident.
Fellowship Benefits
- Five year fellowship period with three years of financial support
- Annual stipend
- Cost-of-education allowance of $16,000 to the institution
- No post-graduate study service requirement
- Access to supplemental funding to sustain research while on medical deferral (e.g. family leave)

Supplemental Funding for Recipients
Effective Fall 2024, new incoming doctoral students at Tandon who are awarded the NSF GRFP may be eligible to receive a combined support package from the NSF GRFP and the Tandon School of Engineering, administered through the Office of the Vice Dean for Research in collaboration with the Ph.D. Hub. Further review is required.
Continuing doctoral students who are awarded the NSF GRFP after the fall 2024, may be eligible to receive a combined support package too. Further review is required.
Process for Preparing the NSF and Supplemental Tandon Fellowship
- The Department Administrator prepares the letter using the template available (NYU Box sign in required). This needs to be completed after the offer of admission has been issued through Slate Application System or immediately
