Ph.D. Student Funding

Available for first year incoming Ph.D. students

New incoming Ph.D. students at Tandon may be offered a 12-month SoE fellowship. There is no employment requirement during the length of the fellowship.  The details of the funding are described in the offer of admission letter.

For the 2025-2026 & 2026-2027 academic year, the SoE Fellowship consists of:

• Monthly stipend of $3,600
• Tuition remission of up to 9 credits per semester plus other mandatory tuition costs for fall and spring semesters only. Tandon does not provide tuition remission in the summer term.
• Tandon Student Health insurance
• One-time welcome bonus of $4,000 that may be used at the student’s discretion.

Candidates who decide to defer their NYU admission cannot defer their SoE Fellowship.

New and continuing students may be offered graduate student support in the form of a Research Assistantship (RA). An assistantship requires on average, 20 hours of work per week during the duration of the appointment. Details of the assistantship will be described in the RA appointment letter.

For the 2025-2026 & 2026-2027 academic year, the RA appointment consists of:

• A monthly salary of
  • $3,700 – $3,900 for students that have not completed their qualifying exam, and
  • $3,950 – $4,150 per month for those that post qualifying exam.
• Tuition remission of up to the larger of (i) the minimum number of credits required to maintain full-time status, or (ii) 6 credits for the fall and spring semester only. Tandon does not provide tuition remission in the summer term.
• Tandon Student Health insurance

RA appointments that are less than 4 months of salary in any given semester are not eligible for tuition support.

Any deviation from the RA salary ranges needs to be approved by the Office of Research, Vice Dean for Research. A justification should be submitted by the department administrator or faculty advisor to TandonVDR@nyu.edu.

For summer only, we allow a higher monthly salary as students can work up to 35 hours per week.  

Students on a fellowship may be provided course assistants or graduate adjunct instructor positions in their department for extra compensation at the discretion of the Department Chair. The amount of compensation will depend on the specific assignment, the number of contact hours, and the applicable pay schedule set forth in the collective bargaining agreement between NYU and Local 2110, UAW.
