Global Challenge: Efficient Public Transport

Originally from Taipei, Berton Yeh is an electrical and computer engineering student at NYU Tandon School of Engineering who has spent the past year growing to appreciate the diversity and chaotic energy of New York City. His underlying passion for technology began in the eighth grade when he built his first PC, but it was his introduction to circuitry during his first semester at NYU that truly resonated with him, inspiring him to switch his major from chemical and biomolecular engineering. Now fully immersed in his field, Berton hopes to apply his engineering background toward his passion for urban infrastructure, with a goal of helping transform the New York City transit system to better serve even more people. Outside of school, he balances his academic life by running, lifting, and playing chess.

At NYU, Berton applies his engineering focus across multiple collaborative projects, helping develop a robotic hand for a data center robot in the robotics club while also serving on the hardware team for ARC Robotics. Beyond his technical projects, he balances dual summer roles as an assistant at Rubin Hall and NYU IT Endpoint Engineering with his work as a tutor at Fendodo Prep. Teaching various AP subjects and leading seminars for fellow tutors has allowed Berton to significantly sharpen his interpersonal and cross-functional teamwork skills. As he looks toward the future, his immediate goal after graduation is to achieve financial independence and establish a stable footing in the United States, ultimately building toward a long-term career that creates the kind of meaningful impact that would have benefited him when he was younger.

Berton wanted to join the GLASS program to surround himself with a community of high achievers, and as a scholar, he is especially looking forward to connecting with all the wonderful people in the cohort. Drawing from his own background, he is most interested in UN Sustainable Development Goals 9 and 11, because he firmly believes that living in a sustainable city with good public transportation and infrastructure fundamentally helped him become who he is today.
