NYU Tandon School of Engineering Redefines Higher Education With New Degrees and Speed to Market

New programs in AI and quantum, 4+1 MS degrees, and expanded international opportunities greet NYU students as classes begin

NYU Tandon School of Engineering this fall is rolling out one of its most ambitious sets of academic changes in recent years, part of a sweeping overhaul of its curriculum to meet a global market being reshaped, in real time, by artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies.

The School's strategy centers on collaborative, cross-departmental research and learning environments so students can tackle real-world problems rather than master a single specialty; weaving AI and quantum into the fabric of its curriculum, not bolting them on as electives; and reimaging how degrees get delivered altogether, with accelerated, global, and executive-ed formats built to reach a far broader range of students, faster.

"Our job is to prepare engineers for the world as it is today, and as it will be tomorrow,” said Juan de Pablo, NYU's Anne and Joel Ehrenkranz Executive Vice President for Global Science and Technology, and NYU Tandon's Executive Dean. “That means we can't afford to treat the traditional engineering curriculum as fixed. We have to keep interrogating it, rebuilding it, and moving faster than we're used to. Higher education, and engineering education in particular, has a history of moving slowly in a world that changes rapidly. Fields like AI and quantum don't wait, and neither should we. If we're not willing to upend what's comfortable, we're not doing our job."

Chief among this fall's developments is the on-campus arrival of Tandon's first cohort of its Master of Science (M.S.) in Quantum Science & Technology, a new, full-time graduate degree completable in one year. The program positions NYU among a select group of institutions worldwide offering a quantum master's, at a moment when quantum-related job listings have surged and open positions outpace qualified candidates.

The degree complements Tandon's undergraduate quantum technology minor, introduced in 2024 and expanded to all NYU undergraduates in fall 2025.

Joining those students on Tandon’s campus this fall is the inaugural in-person cohort of the AI-focused M.S. in Emerging Technologies program, Tandon's previously-online-only customizable "build your own" graduate degree, where students pursue a focused concentration in machine learning and AI, or learn to apply it in concentrations like cybersecurity, robotics, or user experience (UX) design.

Also on campus are the first undergraduate students enrolled in the new Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Environmental Engineering program, combining core engineering fundamentals with policy and sustainability coursework addressing challenges like water contamination and the energy demands of AI.

Additionally, this summer the inaugural cohort of incoming master’s students participated in the new Transformative Summer Research (TREx) and Entrepreneurship (TEEx) Experience programs, working in NYU Tandon labs alongside faculty and researchers, and embedded with startups where they applied their technical expertise to real-world challenges in entrepreneurial environments. The programs reflect Tandon’s commitment to providing technical training with opportunities to conduct research, drive innovation, and build the skills and experience needed for today’s technology landscape.

Other major curriculum changes introduced this year are:

B.S. in Biomedical Engineering (BME) 

A new undergraduate major welcoming its first students in fall 2027, providing hands-on experiences in various BME domains. The curriculum satisfies most pre-health requirements without adding time to the degree, and its courses prepare graduates for the fundamentals of engineering licensing exam engineers must pass to become certified professional engineers. Its capstone design course draws on faculty from NYU Tandon along with NYU's Grossman School of Medicine, College of Nursing, and College of Dentistry, who bring real-world health problems for students to solve, giving the program a distinctly health-focused, cross-school approach with an emphasis on entrepreneurship.

 

4+1 Programs in Computer Science (CS)+Management of Technology (MOT) and Studio Art+Integrated Design & Media (IDM)

Two accelerated pathways opened applications this fall for eligible NYU undergraduates to earn a bachelor's and a Tandon master's in five years instead of six. The B.S. in CS + M.S. in MOT pathway prepares students to bridge technical and managerial roles. The B.F.A. in Studio Art (NYU Steinhardt) + M.S. in IDM pathway blends art, design, computation, and engineering, opening pathways into UX design, augmented and virtual reality, computational aesthetics, and digital production.

 

London Global Gateway and Begin Abroad

More Tandon undergraduate and graduate students can now build an education that includes NYU's campuses outside the U.S.

  • For undergraduates, the NYU Global Gateway Program in London welcomes its inaugural cohort this fall. Participating Tandon students and counterparts across NYU will complete their first year at NYU London before transitioning to New York.
  • At the graduate level, Tandon's Begin Abroad program expands this fall. MOT students already had the option to start their degree at NYU London or NYU Shanghai, but beginning this fall Tandon graduate students in Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), the Center for Cybersecurity (CCS), and the Center for Urban Science + Progress (CUSP) can begin their degrees at NYU London, and students in Electrical and Computer Engineering, CSE, CCS, and CUSP can begin at NYU Abu Dhabi.

 

Bridge to Computer Science

NYU Tandon also revamped its Bridge Program, creating a pathway into computing for working professionals, career changers, and those without traditional STEM backgrounds. Now fully online and self-paced, the program builds foundational skills in areas including programming, discrete mathematics, networking, and operating systems, culminating in a Certificate in Core Computer Science Principles that can support graduate study or career advancement in technology.
