NYU Tandon opens ProtoShop at Veterans Future Lab in Sunset Park, Brooklyn
Free and discounted resource for entrepreneurs’ hardware needs now available for military veterans and community members
BROOKLYN, New York, September 5, 2019 – NYU Tandon School of Engineering’s Future Labs today launched the ProtoShop, a prototyping space, in its Veterans Future Lab (VFL).
Located in Brooklyn’s Industry City complex in Sunset Park, the ProtoShop is a free resource for those with military ties — U.S. military veterans and their spouses, as well as Department of Defense affiliates. The ProtoShop will also meet the hardware needs of New York’s early-stage entrepreneurs and can be used for light machining, metal fabrication, soft goods development, and digital design. The space features a CNC router, welders, plasma cutters, powder coaters, sewing machines, drill presses, and much more.
“The launch of the new ProtoShop is another great resource that we are proud to be able to offer to veterans, Industry City tenants, and Sunset Park residents who need space and equipment to help their startups grow,” said VFL Director James Hendon. “With this equipment, veterans and other entrepreneurs will be able to design a scalable prototype and perform small-batch prototyping for early pilots, both with an eye toward expansion.”
At launch, the ProtoShop will be available by appointment for free on Wednesdays and Thursdays. The space will remain free for the military community, and after the introductory period, Sunset Park residents and business owners will be eligible for discounted monthly payment options. The ProtoShop is supported by founding sponsor Barclays, the Empire State Development Corporation, the New York State Assembly, the U.S. Small Business Administration, Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP, and the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce. The VFL is one of four incubators in a network of innovation spaces and programs that support early-stage startups operated by the NYU Tandon School of Engineering. The VFL is the Future Labs’ newest incubator and launched in 2017.
