NYU-Poly's Engineering and Technology Spring Career Fair

“I am already excited for the Class of 2013. My optimism about this year’s graduating students is based primarily on three things: 1) the caliber of NYU-Poly students, 2) the continued demand for STEM professionals, and 3) the quality of career-related resources and services available to our students,” said James Sillcox, Director of the Wasserman Center for Career Development at NYU-Poly.

This fall, NYU-Poly had over 120 employers attend the Engineering and Technology Career Fair, making it the largest on record. Tomorrow's Career Fair will be just as big, with 123 companies registered. Employers have figured out that they need to engage students early, convert their interns into full-time employees, and offer very competitive salaries. Some of the companies that will be represented at this career fair include, Amazon, Bloomberg, Coca-Cola, Google, HBO, Long Island Rail Road, Motorola, National Grid, Nestle Nutrition, Niagara Bottling, Twitter, and Yahoo to name a few. “Companies have realized that our students are among the best and brightest," Sillcox said. "If employers were not excited about our students, the Wasserman Center for Career Development at NYU-Poly would not have been able to increase company attendance at career fairs by 98% in the last two years.”

"When you look specifically at Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) students, it is impossible not to notice salary potential. In as much as high salaries reflect strong demand, STEM students are in great shape," Sillcox said. According to the NACE Salary Survey,
engineering majors reported the highest average salary at $60,639, though computer science majors were a close second place at $60,038. Another survey, conducted by PayScale, recently showed that all ten of the majors with the highest salaries were in the STEM fields. NYU-Poly consistently ranks near the top of this annual report, but this year we had the highest salary potential among all New York City institutions and took eighth place among all colleges in the United States.

"High salaries are fantastic, but the Wasserman Center at NYU-Poly also wants students to take ownership of their career development and pursue opportunities that will leave them satisfied with their future careers. To that end, our highly qualified and trained staff offers an extensive range of services and resources. In addition to NYU CareerNet, our online job and internship database, all students should take advantage of one-on-one career counseling and small group seminars. Last year, we were incredibly busy, conducting 3463 career counseling and walk-in sessions and facilitating 126 career-related seminars and workshops, including several networking events and collaborations with employers as well as academic and non-academic departments.

"Career counseling appointments allow students to address career exploration, job search strategies, internships, interviewing, resumes, and other career related topics with a qualified professional. Small group workshops cover a range of topics, including job and internship search strategies, interview preparation, resume and cover letter writing, professional use of social media, effective networking techniques, dining and professional etiquette, choosing a major and career, graduate school application process, salary negotiation, marketing global experience, and others. There are a lot of resources available to NYU-Poly students, but there is no "one size fits all" solution when it comes to career development. The best thing a student can do is come in and create a personalized career action plan with one of our advisors."
