NYU Engineers, Scientists Share Cutting-Edge Research

BROOKLYN, New York—This Friday, May 2, 2014, New Yorkers will get a close-up look at the latest research in science and technology as the New York University Polytechnic School of Engineering holds its second annual Research Expo in Brooklyn Tech Triangle’s MetroTech Plaza, also known as Innovation Square thanks to the creative and unprecedented work going on there.

The highly interactive expo will showcase more than 40 of the most promising and exciting research projects from every academic department, as well as exhibits from the school’s New York State-designated incubators and its Center for K-12 STEM Education, which is dedicated to boosting science, technology, engineering, and math education in New York City’s public schools.

The event, which will take place from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m., is free of charge and open to all.

The fascinating, family-friendly activities at the Research Expo will include chances to:

  • See the lightweight auto parts of the future
  • Interact with a humanoid robot
  • Understand animal-robot interaction through a robotic fish
  • View a dynamic model of the planet in real time and at ultra-high resolution
  • Experience the latest in 3D cinematic techniques
  • Create your own augmented reality game

NYU Dean of Engineering Katepalli R. Sreenivasan will welcome the public to Innovation Square to view the results of the school’s undergraduate, graduate, and faculty research. “This is an opportunity to show the breadth and depth of our work, especially to young visitors who might never have considered a career in a STEM discipline,” he said. “Engineers and applied scientists develop practical solutions for real-world problems, and our hope is that the work demonstrated at the Research Expo will light a spark of interest in future generations of students.”

Vikram Kapila, a professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering and one of the organizers of the event added, “The Research Expo will have something for everyone, including practicing engineers and scientists, academic scholars, technology entrepreneurs, public officials, civic leaders, and youngsters who can all experience the thrill of science and engineering. From intelligent transport systems, to 3D character animation, to door-opening smartphones, the Research Expo will demonstrate just how many superb developments are taking place right here in Downtown Brooklyn at the NYU School of Engineering.”
