Flood Sensors Help NYC residents Stay out of Dangerous Waters
Associate Professor Andrea Silverman is a leader of FloodNet, which has installed about 300 solar-powered sensors across New York City to detect and measure floodwater in real time. The ultrasound sensors transmit data to a public online dashboard so residents can see which areas are flooded and which roads remain safe. "With climate change, there's a projected increase in the amount of flooding both due to high-intensity precipitation events and also due to sea level rise," Silverman said.
