Erkip and Poly colleagues receive $618,000 in NSF grants
Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering Elza Erkip, along with other Poly colleagues, has been awarded two National Science Foundation grants worth $617,981.
The first, for $529,859, is for MRI: Acquisition of an Experimental Platform for Wireless Multimedia Networking. This project, acquiring an experimental platform to support research and educational activities on wireless multimedia networking, examines problems of limited bandwidth of the wireless channel, of interference caused from multiple users operating in the same band, of rapid variations due to signal fading, of limited battery life of wireless devices, and of speed and reliability of wireless networking. The instrument acquired will support and enhance Poly’s research on cooperative wireless networking, wireless video transmission, energy efficient networking, and will integrate research and education through the University’s Wireless Information Systems Laboratory.
Other participants in this project are Michael Knox, Thanasis Korakis, Shiv Panwar and Yao Wang.
The second, for $88,122, is for IAD: Cooperative Networking Testbed. This project will provide Poly with an open-access platform that will be used to build two complementary test beds for deployable and scalable cooperative wireless networks.
Knox, Korakis, Panwar and Wang are also participants in this project, along with Professor Emeritus Henry Bertoni.
Poly is one of the pioneers of cooperative networking. The experimental platforms developed by this project are expected to accelerate commercial developments in this active research area and impact current wireless standards.
