Another day, another urban planning conference

Last week, the Municipal Art Society held its two-day Summit for New York City 2012 conference. Over four days this week, the National Association of City Transportation Officials is hosting its “Designing Cities: Leading the Way to World Class Streets” conference. And Friday, the Polytechnic Institute of New York University will convene its first “Livable Cities of the Future” symposium, featuring a keynote address from Deputy Mayor for Economic Development Robert Steel.
The future of cities is apparently very much in vogue. No, none of the events scheduled break-out sessions on Urban Planning Conference Overload.
The NYU-Poly event, though, is unique because of its personal meaning to the university, said Katepalli Sreenivasan, senior provost in charge of science and technology.The symposium is named for former NYU-Poly president George Bugliarello, who died in 2011. “It’s in honor of a dear friend to the institution, the person who helped shape the institution,” Mr. Sreenivasan said. “There are themes like this in many conferences and many workshops, but none that will bind the participants, both to George himself and to the technical and scientific theme.”
