Industry Professor
Dr. Kim joined the Civil, Urban and Environmental Engineering Department at NYU as an Industry Professor in September 2026. Prior to joining NYU, he served as a tenured Associate Professor of Water Engineering and Chair of the Graduate Environmental Science Program at the University of Guam, beginning in 2017. From 2010 to 2017, he served as a Principal Consultant at Samsung SDS and as a Director at the Samsung Economic Research Institute (SERI). He is a licensed Professional Engineer (PE) and an OSHA-certified Safety, Health, and Environmental Professional (SHEP).
Career Highlights
- Dr. Kim earned his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, in 2008 and subsequently worked as a postdoctoral researcher. In 2010, he began his industry career at Samsung SDS as a Senior Consultant and was later promoted to Principal Consultant, specializing in environmental database and web development. He then served as Senior Manager and Director of the Institute of Safety Environment at Samsung Global Research (formerly the Samsung Economic Research Institute, SERI) until 2017.
- At Samsung, in addition to web system development, he served as an auditor and consultant for water and environmental facilities, focused on environmental and safety compliance across semiconductor plants, smartphone and LCD manufacturing facilities, chemical plants, and heavy industry sites.
- Dr. Kim is a licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in Environmental Engineering and an OSHA-certified Safety, Health, and Environmental Professional (SHEP).
