Emerging Media

The next immersive VR experiences, killer apps, and new gaming platforms are made here.

We’re creating and adapting new modes of communication that impact the worlds of art, entertainment, education, business, and healthcare.

A Place for Transformation

If you’re seeking to transform the way people engage with information, entertainment, the environment, and one another, there’s no better place to be. New York City has always been the heart of the global media universe; combine that with Brooklyn’s status as one of the fastest-growing tech hubs on the planet and access to one of the most diverse sets of industries and user populations, and it makes sense that it’s now a powerhouse in emerging media.

But it’s not enough to explore what’s possible in the world of new technologies — we need to consider what’s worth creating and why. We believe in sharing information, democratizing technology, helping the world emerge as a better place, and ensuring that new media is transparent, equitable, and accessible to all

When art, gaming, and tech intersect

NYU Tandon’s Integrated Digital Media program is a STEAM engine driving creative practice, experimentation, media design, and engineering. Projects include using motion capture technology to reimagine theatrical performance; harnessing AR/VR to radically change the way people engage with information, entertainment, the environment, and one another; creating citizen science tools to empower New York City residents; and helping NASA develop next-generation user interfaces for space exploration.

And the Game Innovation Lab at Tandon is exploring the symbiotic relationship between video and digital gaming, computer science, and artificial intelligence. The implications go far beyond avatars and game controllers: the work done at the Lab could lead to profound innovations in automated systems able to run processes for everything from building HVAC systems to global shipping.

Damon McCoy

Computer Science and Engineering Assistant Professor Damon McCoy uses advanced data scraping and AI skills to address the growing concern of social media's role in shaping elections. Already, their Online Transparency Project has revealed insight into the opaque (and sometimes nefarious) world of political advertising in both the United States and Canada, with more countries to come.

Julian Togelius

Julian Togelius, associate professor of computer science and engineering and the director of the Game Innovation Lab, works on artificial intelligence and games. He researches and develops methods for making games more fun, adaptive, and interactive as well as easier to design and develop. The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Computational Intelligence Society recently honored Togelius with the 2020 Outstanding Early Career Award for his contributions to the field.

Integrated Digital Media

Creative practice, design research and multidisciplinary experimentation with emerging media technologies.

The Integrated Digital Media (IDM) Program fosters creative practice, design research and multidisciplinary experimentation with emerging media technologies. Located within Tandon School of Engineering, in the Department of Technology, Culture, and Society (TCS), IDM is a ‘STEAM‘ program combining artistic inquiry with scientific research and technological practice to explore the social, cultural and ethical potentials of emerging technologies.
