Jomin Joseph’s experience in the Cybersecurity Master’s program highlights a strong commitment to technical depth and collaboration. He has explored topics such as AI resilience and governance while gaining hands-on experience through research and Vertically Integrated Projects (VIPs).
What motivated you to pursue a master's degree in this field?
I came from a computer science background and was fortunate to begin my career in an entry level cybersecurity role after finishing my Bachelors. Right away, I knew this was the field I wanted to continue growing in. While I had some exposure to cybersecurity during my undergraduate studies, I wanted to pursue a master’s degree to explore the subject in more depth and continue building my technical foundation.
What specifically about the program appealed to you?
After comparing several programs, NYU Tandon's Cybersecurity Master's program stood out to me for the range of opportunities and resources it provides. Being based in the New York metro area, I’ve been able to stay connected to the broader NYU community and take advantage of experiences both inside and outside the classroom, from conferences and clubs to initiatives like the Vertically Integrated Projects (VIPs). NYU felt like the right fit.
How has the program helped you grow personally and professionally?
Professionally, the program has helped me deepen my technical skills in cybersecurity while also expanding my professional network. Outside of class, I’ve been able to participate in cybersecurity research and attend conferences on emerging and relevant topics. On a personal level, I’ve gained more confidence in my direction within the field and have made great friends through the program that I likely wouldn’t have met otherwise.
What is your favorite class you've taken so far in the program, and why?
I recently completed the Resilience and Governance of AI course and found it extremely interesting, especially since it covered topics that are very relevant in today’s world. It often feels like companies are trading security for speed in the AI race, and this class was a good reminder of why AI governance is relevant and should be prioritized.
What advice would you give to someone considering a Digital Learning Master's program at Tandon?
One piece of advice I would give is to be as proactive as possible! NYU offers so many resources and opportunities to take advantage of, so it’s important to stay up to date with emails from Tandon and the Digital Learning team, join clubs, and find ways to stay engaged outside of the classroom. The classes at NYU are excellent, but what really sets it apart are the additional resources, programs, and opportunities available to students.
Share a fun fact about yourself!
I love to travel! This past year, I’ve been to eight different countries, and I’m planning to visit at least five more next year. In between, I’m also hoping to do a few U.S. road trips and stop at as many national parks as I can.
