Global Challenge: Addressing cybersecurity risks with the introduction of quantum computing

 

Taranjot Singh Bambra is a rising sophomore at NYU majoring in Computer Science with a minor in Cybersecurity. His interest in the field started during high school through his involvement in robotics, and cybersecurity drew him in as an area with immense potential for growth and research. A born-and-raised New Yorker from Long Island, Taranjot loves New York and wouldn’t have it an other way. His faith has been a cornerstone in shaping who he is, helping him develop a strong sense of values that he carries into every aspect of his life. Outside of academics, he loves spending time in nature through hiking and walks, and makes it a point to attend as many concerts as he can.

 

At NYU, Taranjot is involved in his Engineering Design course, where he collaborated with a team to design and build PuffGuard, a hands-free, sensor-driven paper towel dispenser. Beyond his coursework, Taranjot brings professional experience from his time as a Product Developer at Omnipresent Robotics Technologies in India, where he contributed to drone development for an Indian Government contract, and as a Group Leader at a K-12 STEM Camp, where he taught block-based computer programming to elementary and middle school students. Mentorship has been a consistent thread throughout his journey.

All throughout high school he tutored students academically and, as President of Syosset Robotics, made it a priority to actively involve underclassmen in the organization, helping them develop technical skills and grow into future leaders of the team. Through these experiences, he has developed skills in Python, Java, JavaScript, project management tools like Jira and Monday.com, and automation tools like n8n and make.com. Long-term, he hopes to build a career at the intersection of technology and public safety; developing solutions that protect individuals and communities. Academically, he aims to deepen his involvement in cybersecurity research and push the boundaries of what he can contribute to the field.

 

Taranjot was drawn to the GLASS program because it brings together two deeply important parts of his life: the opportunity to travel and immerse himself in cultures from around the world, and the chance to turn that knowledge into something meaningful through research. As a GLASS Scholar, he is most looking forward to building connections with people from across the globe, and, honestly, getting out on as many hikes as possible along the way.

The global issues closest to his heart are reduced inequalities and quality education, two UN Sustainable Development Goals that speak directly to his personal values. Growing up, Taranjot always appreciated the opportunities he was given, and that understanding gave him a strong belief that everyone deserves the same chances to succeed. He is passionate about fairness and equity; the idea that every person, regardless of their background, should have access to the resources and opportunities they need to thrive.
