Global Challenge: Improving early diagnostic methods for autoimmune diseases
Bio:
Born and raised in Portland, Oregon, Jane is currently a sophomore at NYU Tandon School of Engineering, majoring in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. After graduation, she hopes to pursue a PhD in Chemical Engineering and conduct research related to the medical field.
Jane has two autoimmune diseases — Celiac disease and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. Through her own and her family’s experiences with autoimmune conditions, she has developed a deep passion for improving diagnostic methods for these diseases. Having witnessed loved ones suffer through misdiagnoses and having personally gone undiagnosed for an extended period, she understands how significantly one’s quality of life can be affected by the absence of a proper diagnosis and treatment plan. She hopes to apply her engineering education to develop innovative solutions that improve the efficiency of diagnosing autoimmune diseases.
Over the past three years, Jane has developed a strong interest in teaching. She volunteered as an academic mentor during her junior and senior years of high school and served as a TRIO tutor during the past spring semester. Through these experiences, she has supported her peers in building confidence and proficiency in math and science, while also gaining valuable skills applicable to her academic and future professional career. Jane has also been a Womentorship and LAUNCH mentee during the past academic year, is a member of NYU’s Society of Women Engineers and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, and will serve as an orientation leader in Fall 2025 to welcome the Class of 2029.
Outside of academics and professional life, Jane enjoys weightlifting, running, cooking, spending time with friends and family, and exploring New York City in her free time.
