Our student councils are the student governing bodies for the Tandon School of Engineering and serve as the students’ voice to the administration, faculty, and University as a whole.

Undergraduate Student Council

The Undergraduate Student Council is elected by students of NYU Tandon School of Engineering to serve as their primary representatives, advocates, and liaisons to the entire student community. The Student Council is charged with:

  • Serving as the officially designated representative of the undergraduate student body and to advocate to the administration and corporation (Board of Trustees) on behalf of the student body and, when requested, provide student representatives to committees.
  • Coordinating major campus events in coordination with the Division of Student Affairs and enhance the educational mission of NYU Tandon School of Engineering by providing social, cultural, educational, and developmental programs, events and services.
  • Gathering and expressing student opinions on how to improve student life and campus activities.
  • Ensuring that students are fully apprised of all information dealing with the impact to their undergraduate experience.
  • Responsibly and equitably distributing student activity fees and student organization funding.
  • Working with other student groups to program college-wide events designed to foster cohesiveness within the entire undergraduate population.
  • Assuring that all events, programs and services offered by student clubs, organizations, societies, and other groups are open to all members of the School of Engineering community regardless of race, sex, religion, national origin, physical disability, sexual orientation, or age except as permitted by law.
  • Protecting the rights and responsibilities of the undergraduate student body and to work with other members of the Tandon School of Engineering community to maintain and improve the quality of education and social experience received at the Tandon School of Engineering.

 

Elections

The Tandon Undergraduate Student Council officers are elected via an anonymous online voting process open to all credit-earning undergraduate students at the end of the Spring Semester for the upcoming academic year. For more information, consult the:


Graduate Student Council

The Graduate Student Council acts as the official graduate student governing body of the NYU Tandon School of Engineering, whose purpose is to foster NYU and Tandon community, provide an open forum for all of its constituents, and promote leadership. Volunteering for the Graduate Student Council is a great way of becoming an active member of the community, where you can work with your peers to build community at the Tandon School of Engineering. It provides you a platform where you can voice your opinions and act on changes you want to see.

Elections

  • All the members of the Graduate Student Body shall get to vote and elect the Executive Officers of the GSC, with the exception of the Alternate Senator who is appointed.
  • Elections for the Executive Officers shall be held during the Spring semester and newly elected officers shall take office beginning the succeeding Fall semester.
  • The Executive Officers shall appoint the members of each committee of the GSC. Applications for the committees will be solicited at the end of the Spring semester for the next academic year.

Harshit Malik, President

Harshit Malik is committed to building a stronger, more connected graduate community. As Council President, he represents the collective voice of students, working to break down silos across programs, foster inclusion, and ensure meaningful engagement with university leadership. Harshit approaches the presidency not as a title, but as a responsibility to deliver impact — driving initiatives that strengthen collaboration, belonging, and leadership across Tandon.
 

Recognized as a bridge-builder, Harshit combines strategic vision with empathy, uniting diverse perspectives to achieve common goals. His leadership emphasizes sustainable change, moving beyond short-term programming to create lasting improvements in the graduate experience. Guided by the belief that community is the cornerstone of excellence, he champions a culture where every student is empowered to contribute and thrive. In all aspects of his work, Harshit strives to set a standard of leadership that is inclusive, accountable, and transformative.

 

Mohammad Maaz Rashid, Vice President Communications

From the vibrant chaos of Delhi to the never-sleeping rhythm of New York City, Maaz brings with him a passion for connection, creativity, and problem-solving. With a strong foundation in software engineering and machine learning, he now serves as Vice President of Communications for the NYU Tandon Graduate Student Council, where he works to bridge communities, amplify student voices, and strengthen the bonds that make graduate life more meaningful.

Beyond his technical expertise, Maaz thrives on sparking conversations, helping peers navigate challenges, and transforming casual meetups into collaborations that last. For him, graduate school isn’t just about lectures and labs it’s about people, shared stories, and the lasting impact of the relationships built along the way.

 

 

Preethi Ravichandran,Vice President Finance

As Vice President of Finance, Preethi Ravichandran oversees budgets, manages funding requests, and ensures that graduate student events and initiatives run smoothly.

Outside of GSC, she is pursuing a Master’s degree in Management of Technology at NYU. Beyond academics, Preethi enjoys exploring cafés around New York City, practicing yoga, and baking. She is excited to support graduate students this year and contribute to making their experience at NYU even better.

 

 

 

 

 

Demetri Lopez, Vice President Programming

Demetri Lopez headshotAs Vice President of Programming, Demetri helps shape the Tandon graduate experience by working closely with a team of commissioners to plan events that bring the community together. From professional development opportunities to social gatherings, he’s dedicated to creating spaces where students can connect, collaborate, and unwind. His interests particularly lie in creating and enabling inclusive experiences across the campus.

Passionate about technology and research, Demetri also finds joy in the creative and social side of life. When he’s not brainstorming event ideas or diving into tech projects, he's in Brooklyn creating ceramics or raving with friends across the city in his spare time. He believes grad school is about more than coursework; it’s about building memories, friendships, and a community you can always count on.
 

Nobodit Choudhury, Senator

As Senator, Nobodit represents the Tandon graduate student body within the NYU Student Government Assembly and the University Senate, ensuring graduate student voices are heard at the university-wide level. Dedicated to advocacy and collaboration, he serves as a vital link between students, faculty, and administration, bringing forward the ideas and concerns of Tandon’s diverse graduate community. Nobodit is passionate about technology and research. When he’s not diving into tech projects, you’ll probably find him pacing in the streets of NYC or striking up a conversation about the latest AI breakthroughs. Always up for an adventure, he believes grad school is about more than just academics, it’s about building memories, friendships, and a community you can count on!

 

 

Sheetal Prasad, Alternate Senator

As Alternate Senator, Sheetal Prasad represents the Graduate Student Council at NYU Tandon. A Computer Science student, she is dedicated to supporting fellow graduate students with both academic matters and broader aspects of student life at Tandon. Students are encouraged to reach out to her with any questions or concerns they may have.



University Senate

Interested in representing your peers and your school to the NYU Senate? NYU Tandon seeks to fill our undergraduate and graduate Senator positions, with NYU's Student Senators Council.

A student may only run in the school of which they are a student in. Past attendance at Student Council Meetings is generally encouraged. The School Senator will act as a liaison between their respective school, NYU Student Government, the University Committee on Student Life (UCSL), and the University Senate. They must attend ALL called meetings of the NYU Student Government and UCSL, which are generally held Thursdays at Washington Square from 9AM - 11AM.
