Immersive Live Sound

  • Investigate and integrate immersive sound systems for concerts and performances all across the campus and beyond.

This project focuses on the shift in live sound reinforcement from traditional "dual mono" (left-right) configurations to frontal and surround spatial audio systems. Based at NYU’s Media Commons at 370 Jay Street, this VIP team will investigate a suite of industry-leading audio technologies, including L-Acoustics L-ISA, d&b Soundscape, and the SAD spatial audio processor from New Audio Technologies, to investigate how spatial audio can better connect auditory events with visual perception. While the sound systems at the Iris Cantor Theater, SAI Studio, The Yard, and the Garage Performance Space are fully commissioned and tested, we are currently only scratching the surface of their creative and technical potential.

The project seeks to move beyond isolated proofs of concept to develop standardized workflows and methodologies for the technical reinforcement of live immersive performance. By building a vertically integrated team of faculty, staff, students, and industry, we will create a sustainable pipeline for research in fields that mirror emerging trends seen in global venues like the Las Vegas Sphere and Jazz at Lincoln Center. This initiative will provide a unique environment where students earn credit while contributing to the future of live concert design and system integration.
