Policies and Guidelines
Here you will find the policies, procedures, and guidelines that support Tandon's research mission. These documents provide clarity on expectations, responsibilities, and processes. Please review the relevant sections to stay informed about current policies. If you have any questions or need further assistance, contact TandonVDR@nyu.edu.
Discretionary Funds
Fund 20 are discretionary funds, and this policy describes the different types of Fund 20 and their allowable uses.
Policy for use of Discretionary Funds effective June 2025
Q&A for Tandon Discretionary Use Policy
How does this differ from the previous policy on the use of discretionary funds?
Previously, any use of Fund 20 for faculty summer salary required explicit approval from the Vice Dean for Research (VDR). Under the current policy, faculty may now allocate one month of summer salary from Fund 20 without seeking prior permission.
Does this policy impact my use of gift funds (Fund 22)?
No. Fund 22 gift funds should be unrestricted and are not impacted by this policy. Faculty should review the terms of the gift agreement; if they were able take summer months from the Fund 22 gift funds, they can continue to do so.
Why did you start the policy on June 1?
The June 1 start date was chosen to provide faculty with the flexibility to use Fund 20 for summer salary during the month of June without requiring additional administrative approval.
How many people does this policy impact?
Faculty use of Fund 20 for summer salary is minimal. Fund 20s are predominantly used for research personnel.
- Only 5% of Fund 20 expenditures go toward faculty summer support, and 75% of that is used to offset the 5% gap not covered by sponsored programs (24/25 funds) (NYU Policy imposes a maximum of 95% from sponsored programs).
- Since 2020, the number of faculty per year taking one or more months of summer salary from Fund 20 has been 5 or less (average: 3 per year).
My appointment letter states I can have two summer months this year. Does this mean I can only take one month?
No. This policy does not affect the use of faculty commitment fund 20s typically set up to cover faculty start-ups.
Why are you limiting us to only one summer month? What do other NYU Schools do?
This policy aligns with practices at other NYU schools (e.g., A&S, Steinhardt), where institutional (non-sponsored) funds are generally not used to cover summer salary. The policy reinforces the principle that summer salary should be funded through external sources.
What if I really need to take a second summer month for my research from Fund 20?
Exceptions can be considered. Please contact the VDR directly. As in prior years, faculty will define the research for which they need the additional month’s funding. As part of the review, we will evaluate whether your research personnel (students, postdocs) are adequately supported.
I have never heard of Fund 20 – how can I get extra discretionary funds without being a part of a center or some special arrangement
The dean’s office is revamping the allocation of discretionary funds and will be presenting a new model when finalized. For those who do have discretionary funds, we wanted to provide some guidelines on their use.
