Intelligent Fire Detection Technology Enhances Building Safety

NYU Fire Research Group researchers developed an AI system that identifies flames and smoke in real-time using standard security cameras, analyzing frames at 0.016 seconds per image. Published in IEEE Internet of Things Journal, the system achieved 80.6% accuracy in fire identification. Research Associate Professor Prabodh Panindre explained: "The key advantage is speed and coverage. A single camera is capable of monitoring areas far larger than what traditional smoke detectors can cover." Sunil Kumar added that by tracking evolving fire characteristics, the system achieves 92.6% accuracy in eliminating false detections.
