DAC 2025: Towards Multi-Agent Systems In EDA

At Design Automation Conference 2025, Electronic Design Automation (EDA) vendors showcased multi-agent systems for autonomous chip design workflows. Microsoft demonstrated AI agents that can handle complex tasks from intent to spec to RTL design, with iterative validation and optimization. Institute Associate Professor Siddharth Garg noted challenges: "We're behind because data is scarcely available in the public domain. I also think hardware engineering tasks are fundamentally more challenging. Agentic systems are designed to optimize rewards. In the hardware space, [metrics like] power/performance/area, routing congestion, these things are a lot harder to measure than rewards in software engineering.”
