AI system detects fires before alarms sound, NYU study shows
NYU Tandon's Fire Research Group developed an AI system that detects fires using existing CCTV cameras, analyzing video frames in 0.016 seconds. The system combines multiple AI models to reduce false alarms and achieved 80.6% detection accuracy. Research Associate Professor Prabodh Panindre said: "The key advantage is speed and coverage. A single camera can monitor a much larger area than traditional detectors, and we can spot fires in the initial stages."
