David W. Woods, PhD, FAICP, is Principal and Executive Vice President of GreenWoods Associates (GWA), based in Manhattan and Long Island, and has over thirty years of leadership experience as a public servant, non-profit organization leader, educator, and planning consultant in private practice in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and other parts of the country. David’s academic background includes advanced degrees in urban sociology (PhD, Fordham University, 2009), urban planning (MSP, Florida State University), and public administration (MA, University of Maryland).
Throughout his career, David has focused on providing intelligent and responsive leadership that supports other leaders in effecting inclusive, sustainable changes to promote livability, equitable community investment, and environmental sustainability for the long term. My book, Democracy Deferred: Civic Leadership after 9/11 (Palgrave Macmillan, 2012), “…relates a story of civic engagement from his personal perspective as a participant observer. … This book … raises the important strategic question about how citizens can influence decision-making in representative democracy. … [It is] most appropriate [for] students in urban planning who are focused on a career in civic engagement as well as those studying urban sociology” (Lynne B. Sagalyn, Journal of Planning Education and Research, Vol. 38, No. 1, March 2018).
In addition, I have been elected to the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Certified Planners (FAICP), the highest honor the American Planning Association gives to planners “in recognition of exemplary leadership, high standards, outstanding achievements, and distinguished contributions to the art and science of planning.”
