Recognizing outstanding faculty in the areas of teaching, research and inclusion

NYU Tandon annually recognizes outstanding faculty who have made significant contributions in the areas of teaching, research, and inclusion. Awards are announced by the end of May and will be presented in a special ceremony at the beginning of the Fall semester.

Excellence in Research Award

The Excellence in Research Award will be bestowed annually upon a senior faculty member in recognition of significant and sustained research accomplishments over the preceding five years as demonstrated by publications in top-tier venues, funded research proposals, Ph.D. student mentoring, recognition by professional societies, and/or translation of research to marketplace. The Research Award Committee will select the awardee, with the concurrence of the Dean, from the nominations submitted by the Departments or Centers. The award carries an honorarium of $5000. The committee will  consist of three past winners of the award, the Vice Dean for Research, and the Vice Dean for Faculty Affairs. 

Nomination Materials and Process

Nominations should include:

  • current CV of the nominee including a complete list of publications (including journal impact factors and paper citation numbers where available).

Nominations from faculty, who have been at Tandon for at least 5 years, but excluding self-nominations, should be sent, as a single pdf file, to the Office of Faculty Affairs and Development at nyutandonfacultydevelopment@nyu.edu by Wednesday, April 10, 2024.


Institute Associate Professor

A newly promoted Associate Professor with tenure may be designated as Institute Associate Professor, in recognition of significant accomplishments in research, teaching, and service, and the expectation of becoming a leader in his/her professional field. The School of Engineering Tenure and Promotion Committee will select the awardee(s), with the concurrence of the Dean, through its evaluation of all the candidates for tenure with promotion to Associate Professor each year up to the end of May.  The title carries an annual discretionary fund of $10,000 that can be used for research and/or teaching innovation; the term of the appointment is three years. 


Institute Professors

A tenured full professor may be designated as Institute Professor by the Dean, in recognition of exceptional contributions through research and educational activities. The title carries an annual discretionary fund of $25,000 that can be used for research and/or teaching innovation; the term will be for five years, renewable after review at the end of the term. 


Junior Faculty Research Award

The Junior Faculty Research Award will be bestowed annually upon a tenure-track Assistant Professor who recently passed the third-year review in recognition of significant research accomplishments as demonstrated by publications in top-tier venues, funded research proposals, student mentoring, and recognition by professional societies. The School of Engineering Tenure and Promotion Committee will select the awardee, with the concurrence of the Dean, through its evaluation of all the candidates for the third-year review each year up to the end of May. The award carries an honorarium of $5000. 


Dean’s Award for Excellence in Online Education

The Dean’s Award for Excellence in Online Education will be bestowed annually to one faculty member who is an instructor of record for online courses, who has demonstrated excellence in online education, through personal commitment to students and the development and delivery of innovative online education material. The recipient will receive a $5,000 award.

Distinguished Teacher Award

The Distinguished Teacher Award, part of a gift made by Dr. Joseph Jacobs to recognize and foster teaching excellence, is the premier teaching award at NYU Tandon and is awarded to one faculty member annually, who has demonstrated sustained excellence in teaching over the past five years. The recipient of the Distinguished Teacher Award will receive a $5,000 award.

Jacobs Excellence in Education Innovation Award

The Jacobs Excellence in Education Innovation Award, part of a gift made by Dr. Joseph Jacobs to recognize and foster teaching excellence, is given to one individual or group each year who has demonstrated educational innovation and excellence. Each recipient (individual or team) will receive a $5,000 award.

Inclusive Excellence Award

The Inclusive Excellence Award for Faculty will be awarded each year to a Tandon faculty member who demonstrates inclusive leadership and manifests the ideals of diversity, belonging, and equity through research and scholarship, creative work, teaching, mentoring, and/or service.  The recipient will receive a $5,000 award.
