NYU Tandon Teaching Awards
Guidelines
The NYU Tandon School of Engineering recognizes excellence in teaching with three awards. See Faculty Recognition Awards for descriptions of each.
Distinguished Teaching Award
Primary Evaluation Criteria
- Personal commitment to student learning and mentorship as indicated by supporting statements (e.g. student assessments, testimony from current and former students)
- Preparation, revision, organization, delivery, and testing of lecture materials
- Accessibility to students both in and out of class
- The writing of textbooks, course notes, and laboratory notes
- The development of new curricula, new courses, new laboratory experiments, or new media for learning
Eligibility
- All full-time Tandon School of Engineering faculty members (tenure-track, tenured, contract faculty) with a minimum of five years of teaching experience.
- Department chairs with prior or current teaching responsibilities are also eligible.
- Members of the Administration above the Department Chair level are not eligible.
- Nominees from previous years may be nominated again; however, documents must be updated and resubmitted.
- The Distinguished Teacher Award and the Jacobs Excellence Awards cannot be awarded to the same individual in the same year or in consecutive years.
- More than one candidate may be nominated per department.
- Faculty members may be nominated for all three teaching awards in a given year, but would only be eligible to be awarded one.
- Previous recipients of the Distinguished Teaching Award are eligible to be re-nominated after five years.
- Previous recipients of these awards may be asked to serve on the Tandon Teaching Awards selection committee, during which time they are not eligible to be nominated.
Jacobs Excellence in Education Innovation Award
Primary Evaluation Criteria
- Recognition or awards received for educational activities at the national level, such as:
- Receipt of an educational grant
- Invitation to present at conferences or meetings focused on education
- Invitation to give an educational workshop
- Use of nominee's web materials by educators outside of the School of Engineering, as documented by tracking of website hits and testimonials from users
- Invitation to participate in educational showcases
- Publication of articles focused on education in nationally distributed journals
- Commitment to students and active learning as indicated by supporting statements and documents (e.g. student assessments, testimony from relevant student groups).
- Development and use of lecture material involving active learning and/or innovative delivery style.
- Development of innovative curricula, innovative courses, innovative laboratory experiments, or use of media or technology in education in an innovative way.
Eligibility
- All full-time Tandon faculty members are eligible, regardless of the number of years of teaching experience.
- Department chairs with prior or current teaching responsibilities are also eligible.
- Members of the Administration above the Department Chair level are not eligible.
- Nominees from previous years may be nominated again; however, documents must be updated and resubmitted.
- The Distinguished Teacher Award and the Jacobs Excellence in Education Innovation Award cannot be awarded to the same individual in the same year or in consecutive years.

- Teams led by full-time faculty are eligible, and full-time non-instructional staff and/or full-time students may be members of a nominated team.
Dean’s Award for Excellence in Online Education
Primary Evaluation Criteria
- Personal commitment to students and online learning as indicated by supporting statements and documents (e.g. student assessments, testimony from current and former students)
- Development and use of lecture material involving active learning and/or innovative delivery style in an online course
- Development of innovative curricula, innovative courses, innovative laboratory experiments, or use of media or technology for online education in an innovative way
- Accessibility to students
Eligibility
- All School of Engineering faculty members are eligible for the award. This includes tenured/ tenure-track faculty, continuing contract faculty, adjunct faculty, and all others who are instructors of record for online courses.
- Department chairs with prior or current teaching responsibilities are also eligible.
- Members of the Administration above the Department Chair level are not eligible.
- The candidate should have taught at least five online courses and demonstrated excellence in all.
- Candidates from previous years may be nominated again; however, documents must be updated and resubmitted
Nomination Materials
Nomination materials for each award consist of:
- A Nomination letter (describing why the individual or team should receive the award) may be submitted by anyone in the Tandon community.
Nomination letters should be submitted by the announced deadline each year to the Faculty Development, nyutandonfacultydevelopment@nyu.edu
Nominees will submit by the announced deadline to the Faculty Development, nyutandonfacultydevelopment@nyu.edu
- A statement of teaching philosophy that includes approaches to establishing learning objectives, methods, and assessment.
- Current CV.
- A list of courses taught per semester during the last four semesters along with student enrollments in those courses; include a syllabus for each distinct course.
- Student evaluations within the last five years.
Selection Committee
A single Teaching Awards Committee will be established each year for all three Teaching Awards. The committee will consist of:
- One past winner of each of the three awards, appointed by the Faculty Executive Committee
- The Director of Faculty Development
- One undergraduate student and one graduate student selected by the Student Government
- One alumnus/alumna appointed by the Polytechnic Alumni Association Executive Committee
The Director of Faculty Development will convene the committee and is the custodian of the files of the Committee. Committee selection of award recipients will be reported to the FEC and the Dean by the announced deadline.
