CUE Distinguished Seminar Series - J. Carlos Santamarina
About the Speaker
J. Carlos Santamarina is a Professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology whose pioneering research spans geotechnical engineering, soil behavior, and energy geosystems. His work integrates experimental studies, field observations, and numerical modeling to address pressing challenges in energy resources, infrastructure resilience, and environmental systems. Prof. Santamarina is widely recognized for his leadership in linking fundamental soil mechanics with practical engineering applications, and for mentoring generations of engineers advancing civil and geotechnical practice.
Seminar Overview
This seminar will explore cutting-edge insights into energy geotechnics and subsurface systems, focusing on the behavior of soils and sediments in relation to critical societal needs such as:
- Sustainable energy infrastructure: foundations, offshore systems, and carbon sequestration.
- Subsurface processes: gas hydrates, reservoir behavior, and soil–structure interaction.
- Engineering resilience: designing solutions that account for uncertainty, variability, and extreme events.
Prof. Santamarina will share findings from recent projects at Georgia Tech, highlight the interdisciplinary challenges of geo-energy systems, and discuss future directions in research and practice.
