CUE Distinguished Seminar Series - Armistead G. Russell
About the Speaker
Armistead G. Russell is the Howard T. Tellepsen Chair and Regents’ Professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology. A leading scholar in environmental engineering, Prof. Russell’s research focuses on air quality engineering, atmospheric sciences, and the intersection of energy, environment, and health. He has advised federal and state agencies on air quality management, led major national research initiatives on particulate matter and ozone, and authored hundreds of publications that bridge fundamental atmospheric science with policy applications. His interdisciplinary work is widely recognized for shaping strategies that mitigate environmental impacts while advancing public health protection.
Seminar Overview
This seminar will examine the critical challenges of air quality and climate in urban systems, with an emphasis on:
- Air quality modeling and management: advanced techniques for understanding pollutant formation, transport, and control strategies.
- Health impacts of air pollution: linking atmospheric chemistry to human exposure and risk assessment.
- Sustainable energy and climate policy: evaluating the tradeoffs and synergies between air quality improvement, greenhouse gas reduction, and energy systems.
Prof. Russell will share insights from his work at Georgia Tech and with regulatory bodies, highlight the evolving science–policy interface in environmental engineering, and discuss future directions for integrating atmospheric research into sustainable urban and energy planning.
