The Center for Urban Science + Progress (CUSP) at NYU Tandon invites you to attend the lecture "Mapping Mental Well-Being in Urban Spaces: PPGIS and Ecological Momentary Assessment Approaches" by Prince Michael Amegbor, assistant professor in the Department of Global and Environmental Health at the School of Global Public Health at New York University, as part of the Fall 2024 CUSP Research Seminar Series. This event is open to the public with advance registration.

Lecture Title

Mapping Mental Well-Being in Urban Spaces: PPGIS and Ecological Momentary Assessment Approaches

Lecture Abstract

The world is rapidly urbanizing, with over 50 percent of the global population now residing in urban areas. While these areas offer significant socioeconomic advantages, they also expose residents to various environmental factors that can affect their well-being. Urban living has been associated with mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, and schizophrenia. Research highlights the vital role of natural environments—such as blue and green spaces—in promoting mental and social well-being. In this presentation, we will explore geographical methodologies and techniques used to assess the impact of urban environments on well-being, including momentary psychosocial benefits. We will focus on the application of Public Participatory Geographic Information Systems (PPGIS) and Geographical Ecological Momentary Assessment (GEMA). Insights from two EU Horizon 2020 projects, ICARUS and REGREEN, will also be shared.

About the Speaker

Dr. Prince Michael Amegbor is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Global and Environmental Health at the School of Global Public Health, New York University. As a trained health geographer and environmental health researcher, his work focuses on the effects of early-life environmental exposures on health outcomes. He specializes in visualizing the geospatial distribution of health risks and burdens associated with environmental factors. His research addresses how climate change, air pollution, and other environmental exposures contribute to health inequalities, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa. Before joining NYU, Dr. Amegbor was a postdoctoral research fellow at the Big Data Centre for Environment and Health (BERTHA) and the Department of Environmental Science at Aarhus University in Denmark.
