NYC Media Lab–with the support of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation–are launching the second round of the AI & Local News Challenge, which is designed to support technologists in applying AI and automation to local news.

We're seeking startups and university teams that are leveraging artificial intelligence to build products that offer novel solutions for the local news industry that ultimately benefit news organizations, journalists and news audiences.

Here are the specifics of the AI & Local News Challenge:

  • Applications are open to university teams (faculty and graduate students), startup teams, and teams based at news organizations.
  • Each participating team will receive up to $7,500.
  • The program runs in Spring 2023 and includes guest speakers, one-on-one feedback sessions and Demo Day presentations.
  • The application deadline is February 12, 2023.

Projects and prototypes could address: reporting (newsgathering, analysis, sensor journalism); audience engagement (personalization, comment moderation, making subscribers happy); and other applications of AI for news (authenticating user-generated content, reducing costs, growing revenue, dynamic ad insertion, data privacy, transparency between platforms and news organizations, bias and diversity).

During each session, Project Lead Matt MacVey will provide a detailed overview of the Challenge, discuss application requirements, and field questions from info session participants.
