The discovery or invention of new materials has provided an ever increasing capability to engineer useful new things such as smartphones, huge affordable thin TVs, and electric cars.  As long as we keep doing this, the future will give us even faster and better information and entertainment technologies, longer lives, and make better use of scarce global resources such as water and fossil fuels.  This talk will provide a historical perspective on these statements, and give examples of what Corning is doing to invent the new materials to enable this future.

Gary Calabrese joined Corning in 2008 and is senior vice president and head of Global Research. Previously he worked at Polaroid, Allied-Signal, and Rohm and Haas where he headed their corporate research laboratory and later became vice president and chief technology officer. Dr. Calabrese holds a B.S. degree in chemistry from Lehigh University, and a Ph.D. in inorganic chemistry from MIT. He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, a member of the National Academy of Engineering, the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and the American Chemical Society.  Calabrese has served on many advisory boards including the Council for Chemical Research, Chemical & Engineering News, and the American Chemical Society.  He currently is an advisory board member for Cornell University’s Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, and most recently was named to the Visiting Committee for the Department of Chemical Engineering at M.I.T.  He has over 60 patents and technical publications.
