A growing number of companies are incorporating gaming and game mechanics in content, location, social networking, education and advertising focused applications. NYC based FourSquare with it's badges and battle to be mayor is one prominent example.

The approach, commonly referred to as "gamification," has intrigued marketers and content publishers looking for new levels of audience engagement. However, gamification has also generated a backlash with many game developers who feel that these efforts are misguided.

The NYC Media Lab has joined with the NYC Chapter of the International Game Developers Association and the Levin Institute for a dynamic debate on the question:

Is gamification a useful and important application of the power of games?

Confirmed debate participants include:

  • Frank Lantz of Zynga and NYU ITP
  • Nick Fortugno, co-founder of Playmatics
  • Greg Trefry, co-founder Gigantic Mechanic
  • Moderater Wade Tinney, IGDA's New York Chapter and CEO, Large Animal Games

Reception to follow in the Game Innovation Lab, hosted by Katherine Isbister, Research Director, NYU-Poly Game Innovation Lab
