What are the entrance requirements for the Cybersecurity, M.S.?

As with all of our Master's programs, applicants are required to have received a 4-year bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. Please visit the Cybersecurity Master's page for detailed information on admission requirements.

Is the GRE test required for admission?
-
The GRE requirement is optional for all online degree programs. If you choose to provide GRE scores, the scores will be considered, along with your other application materials, in evaluating your application. If other aspects of your application are not as competitive, submitting competitive GRE scores may bolster your application.

I took certification courses in CISSP, CISA, CISM, CCNA, SCSA, SCNA, are they transferable?

No. Credit for certification courses in CISSP, CISA, CISM, CCNA, SCSA, SCNA are not transferable to this program.

Can I get NSA certificates upon completing the Cybersecurity Master's program?
-
NYU Tandon School of Engineering is one of the select institutions recognized by the National Centers of Academic Excellence in Cybersecurity (NCAE-C). Courses taken within the Cybersecurity Master's Degree online program qualify for designations in Cyber Operations and/or Cyber Defense.

I already have a master's degree in computer science and I am interested in the Cybersecurity Master's program. Can I substitute classes I took for my computer science degree for the cybersecurity degree?

Unfortunately, we do not allow substitutions from other programs. Pending approval from your academic advisor, you may qualify to take a more advanced course or elective in its place.

Will I be able to get visa assistance for any of the online Master's programs?
-
No. Since the MS program is fully online, NYU cannot provide visa support for a student visa. If you require a student visa, please consider applying for one of our on-campus programs. For any questions regarding our on campus programs, you can contact the Graduate Admissions Office at engineering.gradinfo@nyu.edu or 646-997-3182. For any questions regarding student visas, consult with the Office of Global Services for personalized immigration guidance.

What courses are required to complete the Cybersecurity Master's program?
-
Students will need to take 30-credits to complete the program. These will include four required cybersecurity courses (12-credits), three breadth electives (9-credits), and 9-credits of depth electives. A capstone project is also required to be completed in the last year of study. You can visit the Cybersecurity MS Bulletin for further details.

How long will it take me to complete the Cybersecurity Master's degree?
-
To complete the Cybersecurity program, you will need to finish 30 credits and all the degree requirements. If you attend as a full-time student and take at least 3 courses per semester, you will complete the program within 1.5-2 years. If you attend as a part-time student and take 1 or 2 courses per semester, you can complete the program in about 3 years. You also have the option to take courses in the summer, although course availability is limited. As stipulated in the university catalog, master's students have a total of 5 years to complete their degree requirements. Please visit NYU Tandon School of Engineering Bulletin for more details. Is the program's curriculum flexible? Can I choose some courses outside the computer science department?

You will be able to select your electives of interest from an extensive list of breadth and depth electives to customize this program to your own interests. You may also take elective courses outside of the computer science department with the approval of your academic advisor.

How many credits do I need to take to qualify as a full-time student?
-
To be considered a full-time student, you must take 9 credits (3 courses) or more per semester. Part-time students are permitted to take 3-6 credits (1-2 courses) per semester.
About the Program

My previous degrees were not in computer science. Can I still apply?
-
Although it is not a requirement to have a prior degree in a computer science related field, our admissions team will be looking for applicants to have some background in computer science, be it educational or professional. Those without any technical background are encouraged to consider applying for the NYU Tandon Bridge program, which is designed to prepare those interested in applying to a technical MS degree.

Can I complete the entire Master's degree online?

Yes, you can complete the degree fully online.
If you would like to take an on-campus course, you will need a program director approved exception and host-an advisor or departmental approval to be registered in the on-campus course. We can’t guarantee enrollment in any on-campus course. Your advisor can help you navigate this process. You will also need to take at least half of the courses in the modality to which you’ve applied (online). Since it’s a 10 course degree, you could take up to six (6) courses online and 4 on-campus.

If accepted, can I defer my offer of admission to a later semester?

Typically, yes. However, if you are accepted to the Spring 2026 semester, you will not be permitted to defer to a later semester due to a change in the application requirements.

Senior Fellow with the NYU Center for Cybersecurity, Omkhar Arasaratnam and wife Sabrina, generously provide scholarships for students pursuing a master’s degree in cybersecurity.This scholarship strives to support a new generation of engineers in an inclusive environment that breaks down barriers. It is awarded to a selection of students who demonstrate financial need, academic merit, and a commitment to engaging with the cybersecurity community, allowing them to receive an additional award per course towards the Cybersecurity M.S. program.
