PhD Professional Development Program
Workshops in mentorship, teamwork, leadership, and research skills, with a digital badge you can earn alongside your Ph.D.
NYU Tandon School of Engineering is committed to preparing doctoral students to lead through mentorship, leadership, and teamwork.

Expand Your Degree with a Digital Badge
Earn a professional development badge, which is a credential you can earn alongside your Ph.D. studies. This is a competency-based, small-scale learning credential designed to amplify your learning experience while verifying your skill attainment for future employers. Our badge enables you to instantly stand out in a competitive marketplace for expertise that builds on your degree.
To earn a badge, you must successfully complete 4 tracks. This requires attending all sessions and fulfilling 70% or more of a track’s deliverables on a pass/fail basis to earn the credential.
Track: Digital Literacy
Digital Literacy for Research
Date to be announced.
By Dr. Matthew Frenkel, Associated Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering, NYU Engineering Librarian
In today’s rapidly evolving academic landscape, digital literacy is an essential skill for Ph.D. students. In this workshop, you will gain a deeper understanding of how to conduct ethical research, and learn best practices in data management, open science, communication and publications, and building a scholarly profile.
Track: Teamwork
The Science of Selection: Using Data to Build High-Performance Teams
Date to be announced.
By Doris Schultz, Assistant Dean, Office of Sponsored Research, NYU Tandon School of Engineering
Engineers spend years refining their experimental designs — yet when it comes to the most critical variable in research success — the team — they often rely on intuition and "gut feelings." In this workshop, we move team formation from an art to a science. We will explore how to analyze diverse data sources to predict synergy, mitigate hidden biases, and architect teams that are mathematically optimized for high-impact results. Join us to learn how to apply the same rigor to your collaborations as you do to your research.
Track: Leadership
Effective Negotiation, Team Building, and Decision Making
Date to be announced.
By Perry Atwal, Senior Lecturer, UBC Sauder School of Business
Enhance your management and leadership skills in this workshop, with a focus on understanding negotiation basics, recognizing your and others' styles, avoiding common mistakes, comprehending power dynamics in negotiations, appreciating team dynamics, and providing constructive feedback.
Track: Mentoring and Dissertation
Own Your Ph.D. Process: Lessons Learned from the Dissertation Institute and Being an Effective Mentee and Mentor
Date to be announced.
By Dr. Stephanie Adams, Dean, Erik Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science, University of Texas at Dallas,
Dr. Jeremi London, Associate Professor, Mechanical Engineering, Vanderbilt University, and
Dr. Holly Matusovich, Associate Dean, Graduate and Professional Studies, Virginia Tech College of Engineering
Examine strategies that enable you to take greater ownership of your doctoral education experience and progress toward degree completion. Learn tactics for becoming more effective as both a mentee and a mentor, in ways that are specific to engineering and science.
