Geotechnical Engineering Lab
Description
The Geotechnical Engineering Laboratory is an instructional and shared research lab that focuses on understanding the behavior of earth materials (e.g., soil, sand, rock, groundwater, etc.) and their effects on buildings and infrastructure. Work conducted in this lab includes the characterization of soil particles, their behavior as a function of moisture content, the behavior of soil samples under horizontal and vertical loading, etc. This includes the use of laser imaging tools in combination with machine learning algorithms to evaluate tens of thousands of particles comprising soil samples and to obtain statistically relevant results, as well as the use of load frames with triaxial cells to understand soil behavior under pressure.
