From Air Force Officer to Google Consultant: How Patrick Reilly Leveraged Professional Coaching Service to Pivot into Strategy

The Pivot from Technical to Strategic

Before joining NYU Tandon, Patrick Reilly’s career was defined by high-stakes technical execution. Serving as a Cyberspace Operations Officer in the Air Force and a Senior Cybersecurity Analyst at the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, his daily focus was on identifying threats and managing immediate risks.

While the work was vital, Patrick realized he wanted more. He aimed to move beyond the "how" of technical security and into the "why" of business strategy, helping organizations make high-level decisions that connect cybersecurity to overall business outcomes.

"I realized I wanted to move beyond purely technical execution and into a more strategic role, one where I could help organizations think more broadly about risk."

The "Lightbulb Moment" in Coaching

To bridge the gap between his technical background and his strategic ambitions, Patrick turned to NYU Tandon’s Professional Coaching services. It was here that he experienced a fundamental shift in how he viewed his own career.

"One lightbulb moment for me was realizing that I had already been operating more strategically than I was giving myself credit for," Patrick explains. "I had been advising on risk and making decisions in complex environments, but I was framing my experience as purely technical."

Working with a coach who had industry experience at companies like Apple, Patrick learned to:

  • Reframe the Narrative: Translate complex military and government experience into a story that resonates with top-tier tech firms.
  • Target with Intent: Move from a reactive job search to a strategic, intentional approach.
  • Simplify Communication: Shift focus from technical jargon to the tangible impact of his decisions.

Bridging the Gap with Coursework

The pivot wasn’t just about storytelling, it was backed by the academic rigor of the M.S. in Cybersecurity program. The flexibility of the Tandon curriculum allowed Patrick to explore a wide range of topics beyond his daily scope of work.

"The broader foundation actually came into play during technical interviews," he says. "I was able to draw on concepts I had learned in class but hadn’t necessarily applied directly in my job. It helped me speak more confidently across different areas."

Impact at Google

Today, Patrick is a Senior Security Consultant at Google, a role that perfectly aligns his technical expertise with his newfound strategic focus. By utilizing the career resources at NYU, he was able to accelerate his transition and enter the private sector with a level of clarity and confidence he didn't have before.

Patrick’s biggest piece of advice for those looking to make a similar leap? Don't leave resources on the table. "Utilize the Professional Coaching and use it as much as possible. It’s an incredibly valuable resource, and honestly, the kind of support you receive would be very expensive outside of NYU. Believe me, I checked."
