Women's Volleyball Opens With Win

Edges Merchant Marine 3-2


King's Point, NY -  The NYU-Poly Women's Volleyball team jumped out to an early 2-0 lead against the Merchant Marine Academy Thursday night in both team's season openers. However, it would take three more sets until the Lady Jays would come home with the victory as the Lady Mariners won sets three and four before NYU-Poly claimed the fifth set tiebreaker.

NYU-Poly won set one 25-19 and cruised in the second set 25-14. However, Merchant Marine found a groove and nearly pulled off the impressive come back, as they rolled in set three 25-12 and held off the Lady Jays in set four 25-22. But, thanks in part to sophomore Nicole Breitbart's (Ridgewood, NJ)  serve in the fifth set, NYU-Poly soard to a 15-9 tiebreaker win in the fifth set.

Senior Meredith Shipman (Sugarland, TX) led the Lady Jays with 14 kills and six digs, while junior and fellow Texan, Victoria Kalvert (Missouri City, TX) added 10 kills.

NYU-Poly is now 1-0 on the season, while the Merchant Marine Academy falls to 0-1. The Lady Jays are back in action Friday and Saturday at the NYU Tournament.
