Women's Hoops Avenges Early Season Loss to Old Westbury

OLD WESTBURY, NY -  The NYU-Poly women’s basketball team won an important Skyline Conference game over Old Westbury Thursday night by the final score of 58-50. The loss moves Old Westbury to 14-6 overall and 10-5 against the Skyline Conference while NYU-Poly improves to 15-6 on the season with a 11-4 conference mark and an all-important game up on the Panthers. 

NYU-Poly held the Skyline Conference’s leading scorer Kim Weathers to just 4-of-24 shooting from the field and finished with 13 points to go along with seven rebounds and five steals, despite turning the ball over eight times.

Margaux Pickell’s (Howell, NJ) 18th double-double of the season included 24 points and 17 boards to go with four swats, leading the way for NYU-Poly. Tabitha Larsen (Ramsey, NJ) finished with 14 points, six rebounds and five assists while Shelby Bruns (Elko, NV) followed with 14 points. 

NYU-Poly, which lost to Old Westbury at home in the two teams first meeting, held a 41-38 edge on the glass, paced by a game-high 17 rebounds from Pickell. OW won the battle of the offensive boards, 19-15, translating into just three points. On the night, the Fighting Blue Jays shot at a 36.2 rate (21-58) from the floor, 27.3 percent (3-11) from beyond the arc and 86.7 percent (13-15) from the stripe - including a game-sealing 5-for-6 in the waning moments.

NYU-Poly put together a 21-8 first-half run from 17:47 to 8:52 to go up 23-13. But, the Panthers responded with a12-2 run to tie the game with just over 3:00 to play. NYU-Poly scored the final four points of the period to head into the locker room with a 29-25 advantage. 

Old Westbury cut the deficit down to one as they scored seven of the first ten points to open the second half.  Bruns sank a triple at 14:10 to spark an 18-6 run to push NYU-Poly ahead by 15 points with 4:31 left in the second half. Again, OW countered with a 9-0run to pull within six points (53-47) at the 1:55 mark

However, NYU-Poly nailed five of six from the line down the stretch to hold off the Panthers to preserve a 58-50 road win. 

NYU-Poly will host Purchase College Saturday at 2:00pm.
