Why New York is now Throttling E-bikes
New York City has limited e-bikes to 15 miles per hour, down from 25 mph, following 2023's deadliest year for cyclists in at least 14 years. Professor Kaan Ozbay supported the change: "If an e-bike is no longer assisted at 32 or 40 kilometers per hour, but only at 24, the impact energy is significantly reduced." Ozbay noted most fatalities occur on roads without protected bike lanes and emphasized that "safety and sustainability are not mutually exclusive concepts."
