Why Humanoid Robots Are So Hard to Mass-Produce in the U.S.

Institute Associate Professor Chen Feng, founding co-director of the NYU Center for Robotics and Embodied Intelligence, showed how his lab built a simple wheeled robot prototype from open-source hardware designs and off-the-shelf parts for about $10,000, compared with $150,000 to $500,000 for a typical humanoid prototype. "I would say the prototype is definitely a bit more fragile, but the good thing is when you build the prototype yourself, you know how to fix them," Feng said.
