Assistant Professor Khalil Ramadi, whose lab develops ingestible devices including an LED capsule that stimulates gut neurons and a microbiome-sampling pill, commented on recent advances made in the field of ingestible sensors, explaining that the gut's harsh mechanical and chemical environment makes engineering these devices particularly difficult, and that the battery remains the single largest obstacle to further shrinking them.
