Softball Splits With Occidental
Rathburn Picks Up Win #2; Smith's Goes 5-for-7
LOS ANGELES, CA - The NYU-Poly softball team had to settle for a split with Occidental College on Tuesday, as the team continued its 2011 California tour. The Jays improve to 2-4 on the season while Occidental improves to 13-6.
In game one, Occidental picked up a run in each of the first two innings off of starter Brianna Feist (San Diego, CA) and held off NYU-Poly down the stretch for the 2-1 victory. Sophomore Annamarie Smith (Henderson, NV) went 2-for-3 on the day, while the Jays picked up their lone run in the top of the fourth on an RBI single by Elizabeth Schrandt (Newtown, PA). The Lady Jays however, squandered their best chance of the game as they left the bases loaded in that same inning.
Feist (0-2) suffered the loss going six innings and scattering five hits on two earned runs. She struck out one, but walked three.
In game two, freshmen Lyndsey Rathburn (Mission Viejo, CA) earned her second win of the season as she allowed five hits in six innings and just one earned run, while striking out three. Smith had another big game at the plate, going 3-for-4 and scoring a run. Freshmen Karina Amaro (Goleta, CA) knocked in two runs for the Lady Jays, who won the second game 5-1.
NYU-Poly returns to the diamond tomorrow as they play at Whittier College in another double-header.
