Softball Splits With Mount Saint Mary

Lady Jays Fall 5-1; Win 11-3

NEWBURGH, NY -  The NYU-Poly softball team travelled to Mount Saint Mary Sunday afternoon for its Skyline Conference opener and had to settle for a split with the Lady Knights. NYU-Poly dropped the opener 5-1 before rallying back to take game two 11-3.  NYU-Poly is now 4-8 overall and 1-1 in the Skyline, while MSM levels at 2-2 in the conference and 9-4-1 overall.

In game one, the two teams went into the fifth inning tied 1-1. But in the home half, Mount struck for four runs off of NYU-Poly sophomore starter Miranda Merilli (Altoona, PA); the highlight a 2-run homer that pushed the lead to 5-1.  The Lady Jays could not muster any offense, as Mount held NYU-Poly to six hits, two of which went to sophomore Corine Fitzgibbons (Brooklyn, NY).

Game two was all NYU-Poly as the offense erupted for 11 runs on 15 hits. Three Lady Jays smacked home runs, with sophomore Natalia Stockinger (Putnam Valley, NY) had a career day at the plate, belting a two-run in the second and three-run homer in the third.  Freshmen Sadie Hoschen (Huntington Beac, CA) hit a solo shot, her first collegiate round-tripper, in the third. She was 3-for-3 on the day with three runs scored.  Fitzgibbons completed the homer parade, connecting on her second of the year in the fourth.  Freshmen Megan Moran ( Reno, NV) rounded out the offense with a 3-for-3 performance.

On the mound, freshmen Brianna Feist (San Diego, CA) earned her first collegiate win, as she scattered five hits and allowed just one earned run. She struck out two and walked one.
