Softball Earns Pair of Wins in Florida

Defeats Lasell and Roger Williams

Fort Myers, FL -  After a slow start at the Gene Cusic Softball Classic in Fort Myers, Florida, the NYU-Poly softball team is reving on all cylinders now. Today, the Lady Jays defeated Lasell College, 5-4 in an 8-inning thriller and then cruised past Roger Williams 8-3. NYU-Poly has now won three straight, after opening with four straight losses.

Down 3-2 in the bottom of the 7th inning, freshmen Corinne Fitzgibbons (Brooklyn, NY) tied the game up as she crushed her first career homerun off a first-pitch fastball. Lasell would retake the lead, 4-3, in the top of the 8th, setting up the dramatic ending. With one out and freshmen Shelby Bruns (Elko, NV) at third and sophomore Katie Jo Sunday (West Lawn, PA) on second, senior Laura Buzzard (Warrington, PA) smacked a basehit that drove in both Lady Jays and gave NYU-Poly the 5-4 win.

Against Roger Williams, the bats came alive up and down the NYU-Poly lineup, but it was the defense of third baseman Ryan Graybill (Missouri City, TX) that stood out. The senior recorded 10 assists and one putout in the 8-3 victory.

NYU-Poly (3-4) will play Fredonia State, Amherst, and Curry College tomorrow in the final day of competition.
