‘Red flag for the Arctic’: Nitrogen levels threaten marine food
Climate change is altering nitrogen composition in Arctic rivers, depriving marine ecosystems of essential nutrients. A study of six major Arctic rivers found declining inorganic nitrogen and increasing dissolved organic nitrogen between 2003-2023. Assistant Professor Bridger Ruyle, who led the study, said "This is a red flag for the Arctic. Rapid changes in river nitrogen chemistry could completely transform how these marine ecosystems function."
