Panthers easily tamed by NYU-Poly
Blue Jays 1-0 in conference play
Brooklyn, NY - After 10 straight away matches, the women's volleyball team finally had their home opener against Skyline Conference foe Old Westbury Tuesday night. And the Lady Jays sure felt good to be home as they cruised to 1-0 in conference play with a 3-0 shutout of the Panthers.
It was a balanced team attack for NYU-Poly (7-4, 1-0 Skyline) as eight different players recorded kills, led by junior Meredith Shipman (Sugarland, TX / Elkins HS) with 13. Nikki Breitbart (Ridgewood, NJ / Ridgewood HS) led NYU-Poly with 32 assists, and Melissa Pona (Staten Island, NY / Staten Is. Tech HS) continued to be strong on defense with six digs, while Jackie Johnson (Houston, TX / Mirabeau B. Lamar HS) added four. NYU-Poly continued to be lethal on serve, tallying 12 service aces, with Alexis Walker (Rochester, NY / Rochester School of the Arts) hitting three.
NYU-Poly got off to a slow start, but eventually held off Old Westbury in the first set 25-16. Then the Jays turned it on pounding out 10 kills while making zero errors en route to a 25-8 second set score. NYU-Poly closed out the match with a 25-13 score.
The next match is tonight against non-conference rival College of Staten Island. FIrst serve is at 7:00pm in the Poly Gymasium.
