NYU-Poly outhits Mount Saint Vincent, but falls to Lehman

Picks up first conference win in two years


Staten Island, NY -  The NYU-Poly women's tennis team got its busy weekend off to a promising start. Despite falling to Lehman College Friday night 8-1, the young Jay tennis players rebounded for a huge conference victory over Mount Saint Vincent, 6-3, Saturday afternoon at College of Staten Island.

On Friday, Ariel Zeig was the lone match winner, picking up a 6-2, 6-2 decision at first singles. The NYU-Poly team of Zeig and Siedah Lake nearly picked up another victory at first doubles, but fell 6-8.  Also, in singles Asiah Charles lost a hard-fought match at #5, losing in a tiebreaker 5-7, 6-4 (8-10).

Saturday afternoon, NYU-Poly took on Mount Saint Vincent and rebounded from its loss to Lehman, soundly downing the Dolphins 6-3 with Zeig again leading NYU-Poly, winning in first singles 6-2, 6-2 and teaming up with Stephanie Weldon in first doubles in a 8-2 victory.  Other match winners included Xenia Santiago in 3rd singles, Cherie Jiou picked up her first win of the season 6-3, 6-1 in fourth singles, while Charles had to work long and hard to pick up an exciting 7-6 (7-5), 4-6 (9-7) come back victory at fifth singles. Cindy Ramjeawan rounded out singles play with her first win, a 6-4, 1-6 (7-1) tiebreaker winner.

The Blue Jays (2-2) host conference opponent St. Joseph's (LI) today at College of Staten Island.
